The Rainbow Mountain of Peru, also known as Vinicunca, is stunning and can be seen on the spectacular Ausangate Trek. The Ausangate Mountain itself is considered a holy mountain (an or mountain spirit) by local Peruvians and is the deity of Cusco. Since pre-Inca times the mountain has been a place of worship and offerings and this tradition continues today.
Most trips that allow you to see the Rainbow Mountains require a trek of at least 6 days. We have designed this hike so that it can be done as a day trip!
On this trek, you will see quaint villages, beautiful adobe style houses, and herds of llamas and alpacas. A Journey Through Incan Innovation and Andean Tradition
Your day begins with a private pickup at 8:40 a.m. from your hotel for a scenic drive through the breathtaking landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first destination is the picturesque colonial village of Maras, a town that seems suspended in time, where adobe homes and narrow cobblestone streets reflect centuries of Andean heritage.
Just beyond the village lies one of Peru’s most extraordinary sights — the Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras). Dating back to pre-Inca times, this dazzling patchwork of more than 3,000 salt ponds cascades down the mountainside in brilliant shades of white and rose. Local families, who have harvested these natural salt terraces for generations, continue the ancestral process: channeling mineral-rich spring water into the pools, allowing the sun to evaporate the liquid, and carefully collecting the pure salt crystals that remain. The result is one of the world’s oldest examples of sustainable resource use — a living testament to the Andean people’s harmony with nature.
Our journey continues to Moray, an awe-inspiring archaeological site set at 3,450 meters (11,300 ft) above sea level. Here, the Incas designed a series of enormous circular terraces that descend gracefully into the earth. Far more than an architectural marvel, Moray is believed to have been an agricultural laboratory, where Incan scientists experimented with microclimates to perfect the cultivation of crops from across their vast empire. Your expert guide will bring this ancient innovation to life, offering insights into how spirituality, science, and the natural world were deeply interconnected in Incan culture.
We return to Cusco around 2:30 p.m., leaving you with a renewed appreciation for the ingenuity and artistry of the Incan civilization

Where History and Tradition come Alive
A journey through the Sacred Valley is a journey through the living heart of the Andes. Here, snow-capped peaks guard fertile valleys, ancient terraces still breathe with life, and vibrant communities carry forward the traditions of their ancestors.
This full-day experience invites you to slow down and connect — with the land, the people, and the timeless spirit of the Inca civilization that continues to shape the valley’s rhythm today.
Morning: Pisac – The Gateway to the Sacred Valley
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Cusco into the heart of the Sacred Valley, where the Andean mountains open up to reveal fertile terraces and peaceful villages.
Our first stop is the charming town of Pisac, famous for its traditional market and Inca ruins. Stroll through the colorful stalls where artisans from nearby communities gather to sell vibrant textiles, ceramics, and silver jewelry.
Then, ascend to the Pisac archaeological site, a masterpiece of Inca engineering that overlooks the valley. Here, ancient terraces and temples whisper stories of a civilization deeply connected to the land and its rhythms.
Midday: Urubamba – The Valley’s Heartbeat
Continue your journey along the Urubamba River, winding through breathtaking landscapes dotted with small farming communities.
In the town of Urubamba, pause for a relaxing lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients. Enjoy traditional Andean flavors surrounded by mountain views — the perfect time to reflect on the valley’s beauty and the warmth of its people.
Afternoon: Ollantaytambo – The Living Inca Town
Next, visit Ollantaytambo, one of the most fascinating Inca sites in the region. This town has been continuously inhabited since Inca times and still preserves its original layout.
Explore the impressive fortress that once served as both a ceremonial center and a strategic stronghold. As you climb the terraces, take in panoramic views of the valley and imagine the vibrant life that once filled these stone streets.
Late Afternoon: Chinchero – Weaving the Past and Present
On your return to Cusco, stop at Chinchero, a peaceful Andean village known for its weaving traditions. Visit a local textile cooperative to see how artisans use natural dyes and ancestral techniques to create exquisite textiles rich in symbolism and color.

Testimonials
I went on a group trip with Conquer Peru and it was the most incredible experience! I've never been on a trip that packed SO MANY activities and experiences into two weeks, but I truly feel like I got to see the best of the best. Not only did we travel across the entire country, seeing Machu Picchu and the Amazon, Lima and Lake Titicaca, but we knew every restaurant, hotel, and site we visited was an authentic, high quality experience because of Matilde's expertise and knowledge about Peru. It's so fun to travel with a local who can be both a guide and a friend as you take in all the sights. My favorite part was the unique hotels Matilde found for us, like the bungalows along the Amazon river. And of course, Machu Picchu exceeded all my expectations. It really was the trip of a lifetime, thanks to Conquer Peru's organizing!
